Song Bird

My friend Becca, whom I have been friends with since I was 8 years old, is having a baby girl!!! My friend Lori-Lynn was super sneaky and took pictures of her baby's room. So, Lori-Lynn and I created this cake for her baby shower based on the decorations she is using in her baby's room.

Tier #1 (top) - Devil's Food Chocolate cake with citrus filling.

Tier #2 (Middle) - Vanilla cake with strawberries & cream filling.

Tier #3 (Bottom) - Devil's Food Chocolate cake with milk chocolate butter cream filling.

Entire cake covered with vanilla butter cream crumb coating, and Vanilla fondant.

The bottom tier was the favorite of the day. However, I must say that most of the cake was eaten at the shower. What was sent home with others was devoured by the end of the day. This was such a huge compliment!!! That was a fairly large cake!

As always, this was ALL made with scratch ingredients in my tiny little kitchen. My kitchen was a disaster zone for about 11 total hours. We were even cleaning as we went. But, as most bakers know, powdered sugar and flour like to fly everywhere. So, after 11 hours of baking and decorating, we had to clean the kitchen for another hour. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad there were two of us working on this project. I'm sure it would have taken even longer.

Still, after a couple of days of baking, decorating, and cleaning, I LOVE MY JOB!!!! I look forward to all my future cakes as well.

TAH DAH!!!!

The wedding cake I said I would post pictures of.....

It was Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Butter Cream and Fondant!

The cupcakes were from another bakery! They were amazing though! The flowers were fresh flowers provided by the florist that I placed at the reception.

More Summer 2009 cakes

Here are a few more cakes that I did this summer.

1. Kennedy's Gift:

This first cake was a gift for my niece. We were on a trip for her actual birthday, so we missed the big day. So, when we came back from our trip I asked her what she wanted from our family for her birthday. The conversation went like this:

Me: Kennedy, what do you want for your birthday? (11th)
Kennedy: I want a cake.
Me: No, like a gift. What do you want that you didn't get?
Kennedy: A cake.
Me: That's what you want? A cake?
Kennedy: Yep! a cake.

So this is what she got. I brought all the supplies ready to put together on our camping trip to Big Sur. I went to her as soon as we were all set up and said, "It's time to put your cake together. Come help me." She came up with the idea, the colors, and even drew or created most of what you see on the cake. I only helped her with the name and placement. Everything else, was all her! I'm totally hiring her when she gets older. (BTW - the flavors are Strawberry Cake and vanilla everything else.) That's Big Sur if you didn't know the inspiration of the design.

2. Mystery Cake "The Case of the Missing Ring" - This was for a little girl's birthday party. She had a mystery party and this reflected the mystery. The girls had to find out who took it or where the missing ring was. The cake is Vanilla Cake with Strawberry Butter Cream filling. The decorations are all Vanilla & Lemon fondant.
3. Cast Party - This is an "exclusive to this site only" cake. The cast wanted to celebrate all their hard work on this play. This was a portion of their playbill. I wanted to make it look a little like a pamphlet, but it had to feed 60 people. This is a Vanilla cake with Strawberries & Cream filling. The Fondant is hand painted Vanilla.
I'm still waiting on the photo of the wedding cake I did. Sorry for the delay.

I have several orders on the calendar, but I still have a few more openings. I would love to help you out with your celebration.

Summer Cakes of 2009

This summer has been quite busy considering I work out of my home. Here are the cakes and their stories from this summer.

Before we get started though, I need to thank a few people for their constant help and support on this adventure of mine. NO this is not going to be acceptance speech...I just want everyone to know that without these people and all the people who have trusted me enough to order a cake through me, I could not possibly have had so much success in such a short amount of time.

Nathan - my AMAZING husband who has encouraged me and challenged me to keep going AND keep improving. He constantly tells me that I can do bigger and more detailed cakes. Oh...and he helps me by entertaining the kids while I am focused.

My kids - they put up with the amount of time I have to spend on cakes when they come up. They never complain and they even offer to help every time. Sometimes they get to and sometimes they don't. They are also very encouraging with their "ooohs" and "ahhhs".

Lori-Lynn & Moi Navarro - they are the ones that encouraged me to do this in the first place. They also help figure out the things I just can't seem to imagine or put together. Lori-Lynn has also helped me put a cake together once in a while.

Jasmeer and his assistant Grumit - The amazing computer geniuses who helps me with my website and business needs.

Moving on....
Here are the cakes

1. I did a wedding cake that I am waiting for photos on. COMING SOON

2. Bridal Shower - Chocolate Cake w/ Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting. The Lotis flower & personalized placard toppers were made with fondant.3. Happy Graduation - Strawberry Layer Cake w/ Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting & a Fondant Placard/figure.4. Baby's Rockin' Birthday - There were two cakes in this order. The baby is alergic to dairy so he got his very own cake.

Designed after a disco ball, this cake is DAIRY FREE vanilla. Truly! I used applesauce instead of eggs, non-dairy creamer instead of milk, and vegetable oil or shortening instead of butter. It was delicious!! The fondant is naturally dairy free, and the frosting was also made with shortening and non-dairy creamer. All Vanilla.

For the Adults - Strawberry Cake w/ Chocolate Ganche Frosting and filling. The decorations are Vanilla Butter Cream and FRESH strawberries.5. Movie Party - This was actually the cake for my daughter's ninth birthday.
CONFESSION - this cake is actually a mess-up gone right. It was supposed to be a popcorn bucket. Unfortunately, because of the heat that day, it ended up being a popcorn bag. It still worked. This is two layers of strawberry cake, two layers vanilla cake alternated w/ Strawberries and Cream filling. The Fondant is Vanilla with Royal icing and Gel icing details. The popcorn on top is White Chocolate covered popcorn.
6. Home Run Sports - This has a funny story. This was done for a friend's little boy. I asked him what kind of filling he wanted for each layer. His choices were very creative since I had never done them before.

This is a Chocolate 2 layer cake w/ Cherry Vanilla Butter Cream filling (top layer) and Orange Cream Filling (bottom layer). The bottom layer actually tasted like a orange flavored chocolate. AMAZING. The decorations are ALL Vanilla Fondant. The Grass at the bottom in lemon Royal icing.
There are two more cakes coming soon. I will be posting those when I get the picture of the wedding cake.

Keep checking back! I have quite a few cakes already ordered for this coming fall.

By the way, I like to try anything new and challenging. If you have any recipe, frosting, decoration ideas that you think I should give a try, free to leave a comment.

Update Time

Yelli's cakes has been busy lately. Here are a few cakes we have been doing.

Anniversary Cake
-This one was challenging because I had never worked with ganache before. I learned that I was making it more complicated than it should have been. The fondant came out great though.

Baby Shower Cake
-This was for my sister's baby shower. She knew I wanted to practice doing a stacked cake so she asked me to do it wedding cake style. I copied the shirt on the invitation and decorations for the top. The rest of the shirts were based on the colors of the shirt on top.

Group Birthday Cake
- This was for Sandals Church's Staff Birthday Party. There are actually two different cakes here. One was vanilla and the other was chocolate. That was fun to put together. I was certainly surprised that the cake was devoured. Only 4-5 pieces were left after the party and those they wanted to keep to snack on the rest of the day. I was very blessed by all the compliments.

Those of you who had the opportunity to taste these cakes - I would really like your comments. Even if the comment helps me improve. I am truly trying to learn here. So if the cake was not to your liking please be honest yet gentle with your comments. Give me ways I can improve. OR if you loved it leave comments to encourage me. I would like to know what I do right so I can keep providing this for others.

Racing on Shey' 7th Birthday!

Shey - "I want chocolate cake with Strawberries in the middle and vanilla Frosting. Oh, and I want it to look like a car tire!"

Mom - "OK"

And here it is....

I had a blast creating this cake. I am still learning a few techniques. If you are a cake designer and have any tips please leave your comment. I learn from everyone and every experience.

A few things went wrong....

1) the strawberries had A LOT of moisture in them. It created quite a mess at first.
2) it was a rainy day outside so there was quite a bit of moisture in the air...very sticky and the fondant was harder to work with.
3) the darker the color the stickier the fondant

Any tips?
